|Donor||Picerno, Nicholas P.|
|Scope & Content||
The collection primarily consists of the correspondence of Warren Lee Spitler and Margaret Ann Armstrong through their courtship and engagement from 1946-1947.
The collection also includes the correspondence of Spitler and Armstrong with other individuals, as well as the intermittent correspondence of Miss Maude Spitler ranging from 1913 and 1965. The Warren Lee Spitler and Margaret Ann Armstrong Letters include documents such as letters, photographs, advertisements, newspaper clippings, notes, cards, invitations, and business documents.
Series I, Warren Lee Spitler and Margaret Ann Armstrong Correspondence, is arranged chronologically. This, with twenty-five folders, is the largest series in the collection. The series is organized by month of postmarked correspondence between Spitler and Armstrong. The subject of the majority of these letters is the development of the relationship between Spitler and Armstrong, as well as their everyday experiences in their respective situations, Spitler being a resident student at Bridgewater College (Bridgewater, VA) and Armstrong being a cadet nurse and student at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital School of Nursing (Harrisonburg, VA).
Series II, Miscellaneous, is arranged topically in relation to the content of Series I. This series contains four folders. One folder is dedicated to the private correspondence of letters and cards addressed to and from Warren Lee Spitler and Margaret Ann Armstrong and their friends and family. Many of these letters are addressed to Warren Lee Spitler from friends made during his travels in World War II. Another folder contains some business documents belonging to Warren Lee Spitler from 1946-1950, mostly concerning Spitler's freshman year of college and Spitler's finances, with letters from Spitler's insurance company and Bridgewater College. Another folder holds the correspondence of Maude Spitler, the aunt of Warren Lee Spitler, covering several short periods of her life postmarked 1913 to 1965. A final folder contains eclectic ephemera and photographs found in the collection. This folder includes a role of film, several photographs of Spitler in World War II, a photograph of Spitler with friend Miriam Melancon, and photograph negatives, as well as newspaper and magazine clippings, loose envelopes, advertisements, maps, two Margaret Ann Armstrong autograph books (one empty and one dated to 1941-1942), a wallet, and a framed program from Maude Spitler's 1918 Bridgewater High School graduation.
