|Scope & Content||
Papers compiled by Paul Haynes Bowman. Bowman was a 1910 graduate of Bridgewater College and was president of the college from 1919 - 1946. His files reflect his duties as Bridgewater College President and his work in Church of the Brethren and civic leadership. They include papers from his college years, papers while serving as President of Blue Ridge College, papers from serving as Pastor of Bethany Brethren Mission, his work with family genealogy and some family materials. Bowman's newspaper clippings files are also included.
Many of the materials concern Bowman's theological, Church of the Brethren leadership, and peacebuilding work, especially work advocating against mandatory military conscription of college aged men.
Of special note is correspondence to Bowman from local, state and national leaders. These include letters from Senator Harry F. Byrd and an April 17, 1959 letter from Vice President of the United States, Richard Nixon. Nixon wrote Bowman to invite him to attend a Religious Leaders Conference on behalf of the President's Committee on Government Contracts. The Conference was to "discuss the policies and program of the President's Committee and ways in which interested religious leaders might assist the Committee in advancing its program of elimination of discrimination in employment in government contracts, because of race, religion, color or national origin."
