Scope & Content This group consists of personal and scholarly materials stored with books belonging to humanities professor, author and scholar, Dr. Edith Kern (1912- 2005) in her New York City apartment.

The group contains monographs and serials authored and edited by Dr. Edith Kern. Dr. Kern's notes, especially reading notes, were retained. Ephemera items in the group include theatrical handbills and catalogs from art and historic exhibitions. There is a collection of reprints of scholarly articles. Some of the reprints are marked by Dr. Kern. Several reprints are presentation copies, signed to Dr. Kern by the author. The group contains art prints and art folios collected by Dr. Kern. Finally, there is a small assembly of Dr. Kern's personal correspondence that was found in and with her books.

The materials reflect Dr. Kern's work as a student of romance languages and leading scholar of comparative literature. A number of the materials concern Samuel Beckett,1906-1989, a focus of Dr. Kern's studies. Other materials relate to historic world art, world travel and Dr. Kern's reading interests, including books by Umberto Eco.
