Title Bridgewater College presidents' records, Paul H. Bowman, Selective Service letters, WWII, 1942 - 1945
Catalog Number Temp 7
Object Name Correspondence
Scope & Content Collected 1942- 1945 correspondence between Bridgewater College (Bridgewater, Va.) President Paul H. Bowman, his administrative assistant Mattie V. Glick and Bridgewater College students and alumni in national military service during World War II. It also contains letters responding to Dr. Bowman's views on universal conscription.

The letters are arranged by correspondence with individuals. Some letters reflect a conflict between the Brethren path of nonresistance, a cause in which Dr. Bowman was involved, and wartime patriotic duty. Some letters are marked to highlight quotes about Bridgewater College.

Form letters from Dr. Bowman to students are at the front of the first folder.

Many of the letters are on military letterheads.

Included with the letters is a list [incomplete], "B.C. Men Known to Be in Selective Service" and a transcript of the most poignant
quotations pulled from the letters.
