Description Novelty trinket box or mite box used in saving money for offerings. Uneven rectangular slap and rectangular lid hewn from the historic Hollow Poplar in Mitchell County, N.C. The tree was said to have been 12 feet tall and 10 inches in circumference. "Hollow. POPLAR.1921. N.C." carved on front of box. Metal clasp and lock at lid. Section of spongy wood on uneven underside of box.
