Carved wooden moderators gavel from the 1958 Annual Church of the Brethren Conference. The Conference celebrated the 250th Anniversary of the Church of the Brethren. The eight rings on the head of the gavel represent the eight people baptized in the River Eder in 1708. The five smooth rings represent the men baptized and the lined rings represent the women. Those rings are of equal size symbolizing equality. The first three rings on the handle symbolize the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The other five rings on the handle symbolize the five continents in which the Church operates, the five regions of the Brotherhood, and the five divisions of the Brotherhood Board.
