Men's Quaker or Wide Awake style hat. Brown felt. Darker brown grosgrain ribbon around one side gathered in a flat bow. Thin brown grosgrain ribbon lining brim. 2.5 inch tan leather hatband is stamped "BRETHREN" in silver. Ends of hatband held together with a small sticker. Brown paper label inside with numbers. Some faint numbers printed on band.
It belonged to Elder Daniel P. Sayler of Beaver Dam, MD. He was known as the "Bishop of Maryland" during the Civil War. He was also a friend and advisor to President Abraham Lincoln.
