Compilation of gifts from Bridgewater College (Bridgewater, Va.) theatrical production casts made to director and professor Ralph MacPhail, Jr. and his wife, Alice MacPhail during the later years of his 33-year tenure at the college. They range from the 1980s to his retirement in 2005. The earliest dated gift is an embroidered doily from the cast of The Runner Stumbles, October 20-23, 1983. The latest dated gift is a signed grading ledger with a golden sequined cover. "The Golden Gradebook" was signed by the cast and crew of Ordinary People, March 17-20, 2005. It also includes a list of 101 "Safe Topics". There is also a decorated and signed mirror that appears to be from the Class of 2005. The gift from the February 21-24, 2002 production of Antigone is a piece of circular painted art featuring a golden industrial spring. It was designed by Janie Spouse and executed and painted by Alexis Bear. A presentation copy of Vox- New and Selected Poems- by John S. Shirley is included. The author inscribed the book to Ralph and Alice MacPhail in 2000. Two of the gifts are replica Bridgewater College freshman beanies. These beanies mimic those worn by the college's first year students during the 1960s. The two replicas were made for the Fiddler on the Roof production of 1998. One is embroidered with the production's name and "Traditions". The other replica is not embroidered. Other gifts include framed photographs, framed certificates and signed notebooks. There is an embroidered handkerchief from the cast of The Good Doctor, 1984. The group includes guest books and leaves cut from guest books. The guest books were signed by the cast of performances and other guests during dinners at the home of Ralph and Alice MacPhail Jr. |
