Rick Claybrook Bridgewater College (Bridgewater, Va.) Class of 1974 events, pranks, and traditions posters, 1970-1974. Four whimsical, chronological class events and national events posters (a-d) drawn by Richard "Rick" A. Claybrook. Categorized by class years from 1970-1974. Class events became more numerous as years progressed. The posters are illustrated with stick figures depicting events. The posters become more colorful as the years progress. Three of the posters are laminated with a black and brown background. In contrast, the 1970-71 poster has a black and red background. Some of the major events illustrated on the posters are the winning football season of 1971, B.C student government election day 1972, Reddish Knob visits through the years, the Peace Pilgrim visit of 1972, and political events in 1973-74. The 72-73 poster includes the visit of Senator Harold E. Hughes during BC's Founders Day, 1973. The posters include the student tradition of the Coronation of 'The Man'. Debate on campus and visits to the University of Virginia are also featured. The illustrations convey Bridgewater College president Dr. Wayne F. Geisert as a duck. Lamar B. Neal, a well liked professor of political science and history appears on the 1971-73 posters. The posters end with the graduation of the Bridgewater College Class of 1974, including Mills E. Godwin Jr., the Governor of Virginia, in attendance. The Bridgewater College campus is parodied as "Utopia" on the posters. Other events and incidents portrayed and interpreted are open dormitories at Homecoming, playing Randolph-Macon College in basketball, Interterm classes, an electrical blackout on campus, a party at Melrose Caverns, a panty raid, the arrest of a streaker, the Kent State shootings, a concert by Southern rock band Goose Creek, the 1973 gas crisis, ringing the Memorial Hall bell to celebrate the ceasefire in the Vietnamese War, the Christmas residence halls door decorating contest, studying for comprehensive exams, the inauguration of President Richard Nixon, student government elections and officers, and a trip to see John Denver in concert. The posters were received by Bridgewater College Alumni Relations in 2024 with the Bridgewater College Class of 1974 alumni papers of Richard "Rick" A. Claybrook (1952- 2021). Claybrook signed each poster with an eye reflecting his college nickname of "Eyes". The posters are contemporary to the Class of 1974's tenure at Bridgewater College (and not materials created for a reunion). |
