Print of a detailed illustrated map hand drawn by Harry M. Strickler of Luray, Virginia. It is a diagram of the historic land owned in Rockingham County, Virginia, in the 19th century by Benjamin Strickler. The land is in Timberville, Va, etc. Some of the land is along the Shenandoah River. The land is shown in several plats. Plat A, B aand C are taken from Division Deed and Plat between B. Strickler's' heirs. Filed in the Clerk's Office of Rockingham County Virginia, Aug. 4. 1856. Plat D is made from a deed to B. Strickler. Plat E is a copy of A showing from whom Strickler obtained the tracts. Some names associated with land appearing on the map include the following: George Arey, Philip Arey, John Beaver, William Bowers, Robert Cravens, Moses Cummins, James Layten, Durilas Martz, Catherine Pickering, Martha Pickering, Richard Pickering, William Pickering, Michael Roller, Andrew Strickler, Franklin Strickler, Jack Strickler, Jane Strickler, John Strickler, Lewis Strickler, Margaret Strickler, Nancy Strickler, Philip Strickler, Samuel Strickler, Asher Waterman, [August?} Waterman, James W. West, Jacob D. Williamson, John L. Wise, Lewis Wise, and John D. Zirkle. Of note is an 18 acre tract of land passed from John Strayer to Thomas Moore, a free man of color. To the left is a chart specifying how much land each of Strickler's children inherited. Includes simple illustrations of some natural landmarks and frontier industry. Includes location of mills, at least one of which was built and operated by Benjamin Strickler. A typed note glued to the back of the print reads: The Dower portion of Sapling Hill is now a part of Court Manor, the home of three of America's most famous horses: SUN BRIER, age 27 years.EXTERMINATOR, SUNTICA, also SUN BEAU, from 1931-40. the greatest money winning hourse in the world. He was born at Court Manor, as were Reigh Court, Sun Edwin, Sun Maddler and Sunchen, all foaled at Court Manor in 1925. Gino was sold here in 1940 for $19,500. At this time, 101 hand brought $225,225. |
