Two leaves with attached photographs and a photocopied page with a loose photograph from the Stanley Earhart World War II Civilian Public Service Camp No. 29, Lyndhurst, Va photograph album, early 1940s. The leaves were removed from a larger photograph album compiled by the Rev. Stanley Earhart, 1921 - 2005. Typed captions glued in the photograph identify people in the camp. The Rev. Earhart compiled the photograph album and typed and placed the captions after the war. Includes a photocopy of album's cover along with the cover photograph. It shows the sign at the entrance to Civilian Public Service Camp No. 29 in Lyndhurst, Virginia. Earhart wrote that Samuel A. Harley was the Camp Director and that numerous [conscientious objector] draftees from the Eastern Pennsylvania Church of the Brethren District did alternative national service there. Photographs show: Allen Twente and Raymond Twente at the camp sign Cabins at CPS Camp 29- Lyndhurst, Virginia Unidentified young men on the camp's wood truck The wood pike [pile?] at the camp. The kitchen at the camp with a note that Joel Petre (not shown) was one of the cooks. A photograph of Camp Director Samuel A. Harley and his wife Elsie Harley smiling as they sit behind a desk. Photographs of the camp sinks, mess tables, and a reduced poster promoting the camp. Another wood truck photograph. Robert Hicks pictured in his room with a typewriter that Earhart sold to him. A photograph of Bob McKay cutting Harman Rice's hair. Multiple individual and group scenes of the men at the camp. The camp was established and administered by the Church of the Brethren as one of a nationwide set of campus for hosting alternative national service work for religious conscientious objectors during World War II. |
