Description |
Fragment of a set of lantern slides showing mostly scenes of China from roughly 1920 to 1950. Six and one half printed boxes of slides in original housing. A typed note found with the slides states that the majority of the slide group was made by Nettie M. Senger, a Church of the Brethren missionary who was active in China from 1916 - 1939. The note states that an unknown contributor added his or her own images, especially those of a Matien village and Chinese wool production, to the group. The note was found with materials from 1946 - 1950 from Brethren medical missionaries Ernest M. Wampler and Elizabeth B. Wampler, one of whom likely added to the Senger slide presentation and made the note. 63 slides are mentioned in the note, so the set is not complete as is. The photographs of sheep listed by the note writer are not found here. Scenes show Chinese people and groups work parties, buildings and religious sites. Some pictures may be of excavations. One picture shows a Chinese woman displaying her unwrapped bound feet. Another photograph appears to be of Chinese boys who have suffered an illness or famine. One slide shows a man receiving medical treatment. Another slide shows camels outside a rug store. Two slides are in color. |
