Description |
Shenandoah Valley, Virginia German-made fine tall case walnut clock. Carved columns set in sides. Four carved columns surround face. Large floral and scrollwork bonnet with a spire finial at center. White face with painted numbers in black. Faded floral drawings around face. Small dial with one hand set at top center of larger face. Face signed, likely by refinisher "John [Hicks?]" Reglazed and face repainted. Filigree hands. Lower base and feet replaced. Sidelights original. Jeffrey Evans evaluated the clock in January 2012. He believes the green tint of the reglazed face indicates late 1700s manufacturing. He also thinks the spire finial may not be original to the piece. Provenance is this clock was "sold" to Noah Andes and his wife Sarah Driver Andes for five lbs. of butter by its owner Anna Wampler Kline, the wife or widow of Elder John Kline. It was believed to be one hundred years old at the time of the transaction. The clock was likely transfered to Noah and Sarah Andes between the Andes' marriage in 1857 and Anna Wampler Kline's death in 1885. The clock was given to the Bridgewater College Library in 1977 by Andes' great-grandchildren, Edna and Refa Wampler. |
