Wooden gavel used by Wayne F. Geisert in several of the business sessions that he presided over at the Church of the Brethren Annual Conference in Roanoke, Virginia, June 26 - 29, 1974. Six rings are carved into the head of the gavel. They represent the following six churches: Sugar Creek, 1830 - 1919 Macoupin Creek, 1876 - 1923 West Otter Creek, 1876 - 1912 Pleasant Hill, 1876 - 1912 Virden, 1912 - unknown Girard, 1912 - unknown Ten rings carved into the lower handle of the gavel present the ten decades of Church of the Brethren Annual Conferences between 1874 and 1974. The three rings carved into the neck of the handle represent the Trinity. The gavel was designed and fabricated by Rev. George Harvey, pastor of the Virden and Girard Yoked Parish in Illinois. The wood from which the gavel was made came from a barn used for the 1874 Conference of the Church of the Brethren, which was held on the Joseph Filbrun Farm located between Virden and Girard, Illinois. |
