John Walter Wayland graduated Bridgewater College (Bridgewater, Va.) in 1899. He earned a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Virginia in 1907. He is noted as an educator and historian, particularly for his work on Virginia, with a focus on the Shenandoah Valley. He was an accomplished writer of history and religious books, historical and cultural essays and articles, textbooks, poetry and songs. He was a founding faculty member at the State Teachers College of Harrisonburg and its preceding schools (now James Madison University) circa 1908 - 1931. He also taught for three to seven years at Bridgewater College (Bridgewater, Va.) and as a young man in small rural schoolhouses. Wayland was an ordained member of the Church of the Brethren, a denomination that is reflected in some of his works. He later became a Baptist. |
